The Black Music Village is a timely and deeply necessary initiative. Our focus is preserving, elevating, and documenting Black and African art music (which encompasses classical, avant-garde, traditional art forms, and choral traditions). A global ecosystem changemaker committed to bringing under one umbrella, music rooted in Black Culture with a touch on everything else that Black Music has touched and/or is influenced by - Literature, Design and Architecture, Theatre and Dance, Textile and Fashion and practitioners of these forms.
Core Areas
We acknowledge that there has been historical underrepresentation and systemic exclusion of Black and African art music and its practitioners.
Black music is not restricted to Afrobeats, hip-hop, popular music in cafes, clubs and parties. African classical music, Jazz, Country, Blues, and many more genres, reflect our history and culture and are reformed to the highest standards by Black Artiists on major concert venues around the world, big festival stages and to discerning audiences.
PRESERVE
We are investing in knowledge sharing, archiving, building a records and African literature library of words and sounds, accessible to artists and community
PROMOTE
Through intentional partnerships with peer and more advanced organizations,, we are actively collaborating with organization and communities who support, program and promote Black Music. We acknowledge that before even our ideation, the first and original people this land as well as well-meaning organizations have presented and continue to present work rooted in or also influenced by the Black culture. We also exist to amplify their work to our communities.
PRESENT
Black Music Village invests heavily in creating consistent platforms to present black artists and music on the MainStage; shining a light on the depth and breath of the African and Black musical landscape.
